From F-1 to STEM OPT: Your Complete Timeline Guide

One of the most common questions I get is about the transition from F-1 student status through OPT and into the STEM OPT extension. Let me break down the entire timeline.

Phase 1: Applying for Initial OPT

  • When to apply: You can apply as early as 90 days before your program end date
  • Latest you can apply: 60 days after your program end date
  • Processing time: Currently 2-4 months (plan accordingly!)
  • Key document: Your DSO must recommend OPT in SEVIS before you can file I-765

Phase 2: Initial OPT Period (12 months)

  • You have 90 days of unemployment allowed during this period
  • You must report your employment to your DSO within 10 days of starting a job
  • Your employer does NOT need to be in your field initially, but for STEM OPT they will

Phase 3: STEM OPT Extension (24 months)

  • Eligibility: Your degree must be in a STEM-designated field (check the DHS STEM list)
  • When to apply: Up to 90 days before your OPT expiration
  • Your employer must: Be enrolled in E-Verify AND agree to the Training Plan (Form I-983)
  • Cap-gap: If you have a pending or approved H-1B, your STEM OPT auto-extends through October 1

Critical Deadlines to Watch

| Event | Deadline | |-------|----------| | OPT application window opens | 90 days before graduation | | OPT application deadline | 60 days after graduation | | STEM OPT application | Before OPT expires | | Report new employer | Within 10 days | | I-983 Training Plan | Must be completed before filing |

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Waiting too long to apply — processing times can exceed your remaining status
  2. Not tracking unemployment days — exceeding 90 days (OPT) or 150 days (STEM OPT) can terminate your status
  3. Employer not in E-Verify — this is a hard requirement for STEM OPT
  4. Not updating SEVP Portal — keep your information current at all times

Pro Tip

Start your STEM OPT application process at least 4 months before your OPT expires. The I-983 Training Plan alone can take weeks to finalize with your employer, and you want to give USCIS plenty of processing time.
