What Is This Document?

On February 23, 2026, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) published a proposed rule (Document No. 2026-03460) titled Form N-PORT Reporting. Form N-PORT is a regulatory filing that certain registered investment companies — including open-end mutual funds, closed-end funds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) — must submit monthly to report information about their investment portfolios.

What Does the Proposed Rule Do?

The SEC is proposing several changes to the Form N-PORT reporting requirements:

  • Extended filing deadline: Funds would receive an additional 15 days to file their monthly portfolio reports.
  • Restored quarterly public disclosure: The proposal would bring back quarterly (rather than monthly) public publication of N-PORT data, reverting to the practice that was in place for over two decades before 2024 amendments changed it.
  • Streamlined data items: Certain reporting fields would be simplified or removed to reduce the compliance burden on funds, without materially affecting how regulators or the public use the data.
  • ETF share class reporting: Adjustments would be made to how funds that have share classes operating as ETFs report certain information.
  • Ticker symbol and class-level identifiers: Funds would be required to report ticker symbols and certain class-level identifiers to make the data easier to use.

Who Is Affected by This Rule?

This rule affects registered investment companies — specifically mutual funds, closed-end funds, and ETFs — and the compliance and legal teams that prepare their SEC filings. It is a financial markets regulation, not an immigration regulation.

Why Is The Visa Pulse Noting This?

The Visa Pulse monitors Federal Register publications that may affect visa holders and international students. This document was flagged during our review process. After analysis, we can confirm this rule has no immigration implications whatsoever. It does not affect:

  • F-1 students or their OPT/STEM OPT authorization
  • H-1B workers or their employers
  • H-4 dependent spouses or their work authorization (H-4 EAD)
  • Any other visa category

Comment Period

If you work in fund compliance or financial services and wish to comment on the proposed rule, the SEC is accepting public comments through April 24, 2026. Comments can be submitted at the SEC's website under File Number S7-2026-05.

Bottom Line

This is a securities regulation document with no impact on immigration status or visa processing. No action is required by visa holders or international students.
